Backflow and Its Impact on Your Plumbing System
At its core, backflow is the unwanted reversal of water flow within your plumbing system. Imagine your water lines as a one-way street. A sudden pressure drop, perhaps from a nearby fire hydrant being used, can cause that traffic to reverse direction. When this happens, water from non-potable sources, like your lawn’s irrigation system or a home heating boiler, can be siphoned back into your main water supply. This potential for contamination is a serious threat to your home’s water quality and your family’s health, turning your safe drinking water into a conduit for pollutants.
Our Certified Backflow Testing Process
A backflow inspection certification is a precise and vital procedure performed by a certified backflow assembly tester. Our plumbers will connect a specialized test kit with calibrated gauges directly to your backflow prevention device. We then methodically open and close the test cocks on the device to simulate pressure changes. This exam allows us to verify that the internal checks and relief valve of the backflow assembly are working exactly as they should, creating a closed, protective barrier.
Ultimately, it’s a functional test that confirms your device, whether it’s a pressure vacuum breaker or an atmospheric vacuum breaker, will guard your water supply when it matters most.

How Often Should Backflow Certification Be Completed?
For the health and safety of the entire community, most municipalities in the Indian Trail area require a backflow inspection certification to be completed annually. This isn’t just about ticking a box for regulatory compliance; it’s a proactive maintenance step. Regular testing of backflow devices and backflow prevention devices throughout our community creates a network of protection, helping to preserve the integrity of our shared public water supply and improve water treatment efforts.
Warning Signs You May Need Backflow Certification Sooner Than You Think
While an annual inspection is the standard, your plumbing system can sometimes give you clues that a backflow device needs immediate attention. Being aware of these changes and trusting your senses can be the first line of defense in protecting your home’s water. If you notice any of the following, it’s time to call a professional plumber:
- Discolored or Cloudy Water: Water that suddenly appears brown, yellow, or has a cloudy look points to a possible breach in your water line and a contamination event.
- Noticeable Odor or Bad Taste: Your drinking water should be odorless and tasteless. A sulfuric or chemical smell or taste is a clear signal that something is wrong with your water quality.
- Changes in Water Pressure: A sudden drop in pressure or sputtering faucets can indicate a problem within the main line, potentially affecting the performance of a crucial backflow valve.
- Visible Debris in Water: Any sign of sediment, rust particles, or other debris coming from your tap suggests a possible backflow issue or a break in the plumbing somewhere.

DeWayne from Parks Plumbing came out today for a service call, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the experience. …
… He came to perform our annual plumbing inspection, caught a leak on our downstairs toilet, fixed it …
… The technician Tony came out same day confirmed that I had a leak and identified the source of the leak. …
This week I had my electrical, plumbing and Heat/AC Maintenance done. Jay, Jourdon and Joshua were all 3 amazing to work with. They were punctual, professional and explained things in ways that made sense. I did end up doing some work and am so glad I did. I will highly recommend to my friends to use Parks for all their needs. So convenient to have all with the same company.
Anthony was fantastic to work with. He was polite and did a great job of explaining what he was doing, why he was doing it, and the outcomes.
Service has been excellent! We’ve been a customer for over 9 years and their bi-annual inspections have been timely and informative completed by a team of personable professionals. A huge shout out to Will who performed our last service!
This was my first time using Parks heating and cooling, and I was extremely pleased with the level of service and technical expertise. They initially came to my home to conduct a maintenance inspection on two units and while there noted a few items that needed to be improved. The biggest and most important find was that they noted that the HVAC ductwork was in bad shape with numerous areas replete with large amounts of mold that was pushing bacteria through the system into the house. They provided us with video evidence of the problem, and then offered a reasonably priced solution which require required removal of all of the existing ductwork and replacement it with newer technology The technician that identified the problem initially was very thorough and knowledgeable. He made suggestions, but was not trying to upsell any replacement project. We opted for replacement in within the next day two Installers arrived at the house and began the process of removing and replacing all of the second floor ductwork. Tanner and Anelle Arrived at the house with all of the materials and immediately began the project. It took nearly 2 days to complete the removal and installation and they were professional, respectful, and very hard-working. Each day before leaving, they made sure all their equipment and debris was removed from inside the house and they cleaned up all of the area areas that they were working in. It was a exceptional experience from beginning to end and I would highly recommend parks for any of your HVAC needs. As a result of this experience, I plan to engage them as the maintenance service provider for my systems moving forward.
