A single slow drain: keep the first check simple
If only a bathroom basin or shower is slow and no drain cleaner has been added, look for visible hair or debris at the removable strainer or stopper. Ask where the restriction was found, what evidence supports the diagnosis, and whether the proposed work clears a blockage or repairs a damaged pipe. Several drains or a backup: stop adding water
The City of Fargo lists multiple fixtures backing up or one fixture affecting another among sewer-blockage signs. A toilet reacting when the washer drains, or water appearing in the tub after a flush, calls for prompt investigation. The pattern can involve shared drainage, but it does not identify the blockage location or prove who owns the affected pipe.
If wastewater is backing up, stop water use in the home and turn off running water appliances from a dry, safe location. Do not keep flushing to test it. Keep people and pets away from sewage. EPA advises avoiding contact with sewage because it can contain harmful pathogens.

Charlotte Water customers: the utility's backup steps
Charlotte Water's wastewater-backup instructions start with turning off running water appliances, including the washer and dishwasher. If that stops the backup, contact a plumber. If it continues, call 311 or 704-336-7600. After business hours, select the water or sewer emergency option.
The utility distinguishes a public sewer blockage from a problem in private internal plumbing. Its crews address blockages in the public main or the city-maintained part of the connection; private internal repairs require a plumbing contractor. Let the inspection establish which part is involved.
Use these steps for a Charlotte Water account. Elsewhere in the metro area, including South Carolina, contact the wastewater provider shown on your bill. A Charlotte mailing address alone does not identify the provider.
If the property uses septic, tell the person taking your call. EPA lists slow drains, gurgling, sewage backups and wet areas around the tank or drainfield among possible malfunction signs, and directs homeowners to a septic service provider or local health department. Arrange the appropriate assessment rather than assuming an ordinary drain clearing will solve it.
Skip the chemical and hot-water cycle
