setting thermostat to 78 degrees

What Temperature Should I Set My Air Conditioner in the Summer?

Summer is just around the corner, which means so is the heat. No one likes being hot and miserable all summer but paying astronomical AC energy bills isn’t all that fun either. If you’re wondering how you can best keep your home comfortable without emptying your wallet this summer season, keep reading.

Set Your Thermostat to 78°F (26°C) to Conserve Energy

Did you know that you can reduce your energy bills by as much as 10% just by adjusting the temperature on your thermostat to a warmer temperature when you are away from home? You can also keep your energy bills to a minimum by setting your thermostat to a reasonable temperature while you are home.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, you should:

  1. Set your thermostat to 7-10°F warmer than its normal setting when you are away from home
  2. Set your thermostat to 78°F when you are home

We recommend switching to a programmable thermostat. That way, you can set it to automatically raise the temp when you go to work and start cooling before you get home. A programmable thermostat puts an end to those days where you get to work and spend the whole day wondering if you remembered to adjust your thermostat.

If 78°F seems too warm for you, it is a good idea to work your way up to that temperature. Start by setting your thermostat lower and increasing the temperature by 1 degree each day until you reach 78°F.

Avoid Turning the Temperature Down to Low

Many people will set the temperature on their thermostat very low when first turning their AC on because they think that will cool their home faster. Unfortunately, not only does this put a ton of unnecessary strain on your system and result in higher energy bills, but it also will not cool your home any faster.

Additional Energy Conservation Tips for Summer

In addition to being mindful of the temperature on your thermostat, there are a few other tips you can follow to cool your home and conserve energy this summer.

You can lower the temperature in your home by:

  • Using ceiling fans
  • Keeping your blinds and curtains closed
  • Opening your windows and turning the AC off at night
  • Installing an energy-efficient cooling unit
  • Weatherstripping doors and windows to keep cool air in and hot air out
  • Avoiding the use of heat-generating appliances such as dryers, stoves, and ovens until the evening
