How to Unclog a Shower Drain

Is there anything more irritating that hopping into the shower and watching all of the water pool at your feet? We don’t think so either. Clogged shower drains are extremely common and are usually caused by the buildup of things like hair and soap scum over time. If your shower drain is clogged, there are a few things you can try before calling in a plumber. Keep reading to learn more.

Never Use Drain Cleaners!

You might be tempted to purchase over-the-counter drain cleaners, but we would advise against that. Drain cleaning solutions often contain a bunch of harsh chemicals that cause pipe corrosion. The last thing you want is to accidentally destroy your pipes while trying to unclog them.

Instead, it is always best to use more natural remedies. The below solutions are great options for clearing your drains without damaging them.

Use a Coat Hanger

You might be able to remove the source of a clog with a wire coat hanger. Start this process by first removing the drain cover with a screwdriver. Then, straighten out the hanger, being careful to keep a hook on the end. Feed the wire down the drain and fish out any debris you can with it. Once you have gotten as much as you can out of your drain, pour a pot of boiling water down it.

Use Baking Soda & Vinegar

Baking soda and vinegar work really well together to break down any buildup within your drains.

Follow the below steps to unclog your drain:

  1. Pour 1 cup of baking soda down the drain
  2. Pour 1 cup of vinegar down the drain until you see bubbles
  3. For 30 minutes to an hour, continue pouring a bit of vinegar down the drain whenever the bubbles stop
  4. Once this process is complete, pour a pot of boiling water down the drain to rinse all of the loosened debris, soap scum, and other items down the drain

Not only does this process effectively unclog your shower drains, but it also eliminates any lingering drain odors, so if you’ve got stinky drains, this is the best solution for you!

Use Boiling Water

Sometimes a pot of boiling water is all you need to unclog any blockages that have formed within your drains. Once you have a full pot of boiling water, pour it directly down the drain a little bit at a time. This gives the hot liquid a chance to work its way through the clog in your drain. For a more stubborn clog, you might need to use a second pot of water.
